Canning threw a pitch to Atlanta shortstop Nick Allen, who grounded out to shortstop Francisco Lindor. Planting his leg to run to back up third base, Canning crumpled to the ground and held his left leg in the air. Canning had pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and fanning three with no walks when he departed.
Austin Warren relieved Canning and retired Ronald Acuna Jr. on a pop-up to second, ending the inning.
Canning was enjoying a career season coming into the game, posting a 7-3 record with a 3.91 ERA.
